How Cowboy Fashion is More Than Just Style: A Sun-Smart Approach

By: Amber Robbins, MD, FAAD

In the wide open spaces of the Wild West, where the sun shines bright all day long, cowboys developed an iconic fashion style. However, their clothes weren't just for looking good—they also helped keep them safe from the sun's strong rays. Cowboy fashion isn't about style –it's about being smart in the sun!

Take the quintessential cowboy hat. This widely-worn fashion statement is a shield against the scorching sun. With its wide brim, it provides ample shade, protecting the face, neck, and ears from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Cowboys usually wear long-sleeved shirts and jackets made from durable fabrics like denim or canvas. These thick materials not only offer protection against scratches and abrasions but also serve as a barrier against the sun's harmful rays. Denim has a sun protection factor (SPF) that is off the charts - which means no UV gets through.

Beyond hats and clothing, cowboys also accessorize for sun protection. Bandanas or neck scarves not only add a touch of cowboy flair but also shield the neck from sunburn. Leather gloves not only offer protection during ranch work but also prevent sun damage to the hands. And, of course, no UV waves are getting through cowboy boots!

Cowboy fashion isn't just about looking the part; it's about practicality and protection in a harsh environment. Whether you're working on the ranch or enjoying outdoor activities, adopting elements of cowboy style like a brimmed hat, neck scarf, long-sleeved shirt and denim are great ways to be sun-safe.  Cowboy fashion is dermatologist-approved!
