Building Your Basic Skincare Regimen: A Beginner's Guide

By: Krystal J. Massey, MD, FAAD

Are you looking to start a skincare routine but feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of products and information out there? Fear not! Creating a basic skincare regimen doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're a skincare newbie or just looking to simplify your routine, here's a step-by-step guide to get you started on the path to healthy, glowing skin.

  1. Know Your Skin Type:  The first step in building a skincare regimen is understanding your skin type. Is it oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right products that address your specific needs.

  2. Identify your concerns:  Speaking of specific needs, what are the goals of your regimen? Anti-aging? Acne? Dark spots? Dry, dull skin? Recognizing what concerns you’d like to address will help you fine tune your regimen.

  3. Cleansing:  Cleansing is essential for removing dirt, oil, and microbes from your skin, especially if you wear makeup or sunscreen. Choose a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type, and wash your face twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed.

  4. Moisturizing:  Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin. After cleansing, apply a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and protected throughout the day. Choose a moisturizer that matches your skin type – lightweight for oily skin, richer for dry skin.

  5. Sun Protection:  Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. Ultraviolet (UV) rays cause premature aging, sunburn, and even skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days.

  6. Optional Steps:  Depending on your skincare concerns, you may want to incorporate additional steps into your routine, such as serums, toners, or spot treatments. Here are some active ingredients you may look for depending on your goals:

Here are some common skin concerns and the active ingredients to look for:

Acne: Look for ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid which help unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and kill acne-causing bacteria.

Aging/Wrinkles: Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C is also effective in brightening skin tone and promoting collagen synthesis. Retinols should be part of the evening routine, as they are inactivated by sunlight.

Hyperpigmentation/Dark Spots: Ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide, and alpha arbutin help to lighten dark spots and even out skin tone by inhibiting melanin production.

Dryness/Dehydration: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides are excellent for attracting and retaining moisture in the skin, helping to hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier.

Sensitive Skin/Redness: Look for soothing ingredients like aloe vera, hypochlorous acid, green tea extract, and oatmeal, which help calm inflammation and reduce redness. Avoid products containing fragrances and exfoliants. Additionally, products containing niacinamide can strengthen the skin barrier and reduce sensitivity over time.

Oily Skin/Enlarged Pores: Ingredients such as retinoids, salicylic acid, niacinamide, and witch hazel help to regulate oil production, minimize pore size, and control shine without drying out the skin.

Dullness: Exfoliating ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help to remove dead skin cells, revealing brighter, more radiant skin underneath. Vitamin C is also effective in promoting a healthy glow and reducing dullness. Avoid over-exfoliation and damage to your skin barrier by limiting these to only 1-3 times weekly, depending on skin type.

When incorporating new active ingredients into your skincare routine, it's essential to start slowly to avoid any adverse reactions. Begin with once weekly application and increase frequency as tolerated. Consider consulting with a board-certified dermatologist for personalized recommendations based on your specific skin concerns and needs.

Consistency is Key:  Building a skincare regimen is not about using every product under the sun but finding a routine that works for you and sticking to it. Consistency is key to seeing results, so be patient and give your skin time to adjust to new products.

Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so what works for someone else may not work for you. It's essential to listen to your skin and adjust your routine accordingly. With time and patience, you'll find the perfect combination of products that leave your skin looking and feeling its best. Happy skincare journey!
